Asalha Puja Day (Dharma Day) In July, we celebrate Asalha Puja Day (Dharma Day). Asalha Puja means to pay homage to the Buddha in commemoration of the Buddha's first teaching: the turning of the wheel of the Dharma. Asalha Puja falls on the full moon of the eighth lunar month (July), i.e. in the year 2012 on July 3. It was on this day that the Lord Buddha preached his sermon to followers after attaining enlightenment. The day is usually celebrated by merit making (performing good deeds), listening to a Dharma talk, and joining a candle-lit procession during the night or at the Dharma Service on the following Sunday.
Learn About the Buddhist Precepts
While taking the Precepts may not be important to some, for others they are a commitment to a mindful life. Though you may not understand all details about what it means to take the Precepts, a class can offer some insights and lead to better discernment. The structure of guidance under the direction of a master and of being part of a Sangha have always been the foundation for a focused, balanced and stable spiritual path.
Please join us at the next Precept class: Friday, August 10, at 6 PM. The event will be followed by a get-together with refreshments for those who would like to stay. Please register at sangha@lotustemple.us
